This past weekend I FINALLY came to the conclusion that, where gardening is concerned, I am in a new season. The weekends where I could leisurely “play” in my yard for hours are history. Now you are probably thinking, she’s “older”, kids are married and out of the house, it’s just her and hubby – why wouldn’t she have all the time in the world!
Well, all I can say is: (1) Three grandchildren who participate in baseball, basketball, softball, piano, and school band which means I want to soak up every minute of their activities; (2) Two granddaughters who I am thrilled to have as my house guests every other weekend; AND (3) Yes….I have to admit it, I am older and need more down time.
So due to the afore-mentioned reasons I have decided I will concentrate on container gardening for this spring. A container filled with different types of colorful plants can add a fabulous splash of color to any area. This type of gardening has many benefits – cost, maintenance and more enjoyment because it doesn’t require constant attention. Experiment with different types of containers that you might have around the house – let your imagination run wild!
I have to admit I experimented with one container garden this fall which was a huge success. I used croton, trailing variegated ivy and dwarf snapdragons. Literally maintenance free – just an occasional drink of water when the thought crossed my mind or I noticed it looking a little droopy. Great is all I can say!! Ideas abound in web sites everywhere. Spring is in the air and that means fresh fruits and vegetables are not far behind. For this week’s recipe, here is a wonderful take on the traditional peach cobbler we all love. Just a couple of differences – a hint of coconut and it’s the light version. Enjoy!!
