When I was young, every year or two my mom would get a phone call that would strike terror to her very core. My dad’s uncle would call and say that they were in the area and would be stopping by for a visit. My mom literally lived in fear of that call, and we, her children, learned to fear it as well because it meant spring cleaning had to be accomplished in 30 minutes or less!
Mom always wanted our house to appear to be as clean and perfectly run as June Cleaver’s, but in reality we were much more like Rosanne Barr’s clan.
My mom knew this call would come eventually, and she knew it would be unexpected. Had we lived each day as though my uncle and his “perfect” wife were coming, we would have been ready whenever they arrived. There would have been a fresh baked cake waiting in a spotless house with well-behaved kids and my mom would have been the perfect hostess. Instead, we were caught up in normal life where dust bunnies collect and kids get dirty and clutter appears overnight.
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.” Mark 13:32-33
Jesus is also coming soon – unannounced – to collect His own. He won’t care if your house is spotless or if there is a meal on the table. But He will care about whether you have been faithful to Him.
What “cleaning up” do you need to do to be ready for His return? What do you want to be sure you have accomplished? Are you in His word every day and living it out? If you got a call that He was coming today, what would you do differently today? Do it! He’s coming. Ready yourself!
