One of the perks of working at Priority Ministries is I get sneak peeks at stuff before it’s available on our website or store. I’m probably not even supposed to let this leak, but I’m too excited about it!! I just got a digital copy of Emily’s new book Guilt-Free Quiet Times and it’s Ah-mazing.
The very first myth she tackles is the misconception that our quiet times must be…well, quiet. Duh! A no brainer, right? I mean who doesn’t give their kids twenty minutes worth of candy, turn on Sponge Bob and then go lock themselves in the closet to pray in silence? Just me? As Emily says:
“We must be careful not to become so dependent upon the quietness of the atmosphere that we are unable to hear Him in times of chaos.”
In fact, I think it’s the chaotic times when we need to hear from God the most. When a baby is crying and feverish, when your child asks you how to be saved while you are in the middle of cooking a five course meal for a dinner party which your boss, your pastor and your bible study leader are all attending (hypothetical of course) or when it just seems like life is caving in on you and you can barely focus on doing the next thing. In those moments we need the reassurance of God’s voice.
I embraced the noise this week and discovered a new song that is now stuck in my head. I’ve been singing it to myself all week and reminding my soul to wait on God–He is SO faithful after all. The chorus says But You (God) can do more in my waiting than in my doing I could do. Beautiful song, great message. Check it out for yourself and enjoy some praise-filled time with the Lord.
