Recently a friend launched a new business creating designer aprons. They are fun, unique and beautiful. This lady has such a touch for putting together out-of-the-ordinary fabrics and creating a masterpiece.
On a recent trip to her house, she blessed me with one of her beautiful creations along with a pair of matching gloves to protect my hands when I wash dishes! I was so touched. As I put on the apron, beautiful memories flooded my mind.
I went back in time to my childhood when I first noticed my precious grandmother always wore an apron. When I got up in the morning, she had her apron on, when she prepared lunch, there she was in her apron, and as I watched her prepare dinner – yes, she had on the apron. The only time I remember seeing her take off that apron was when she joined the family for a meal.
Now each one of her aprons had many pockets filled with all the essential things she might need to take care of the family. Kleenex, Dentyne gum, mints, loose change for the ice cream man’s daily trip down our street, along with bits of fabric, lint and thread from the garments or quilts she might work on during the day, and always a Three Musketeer candy bar. Today, some of my most precious treasures are the aprons my grandmother once wore.
Through the years, we have moved away from wearing an apron but due to the generosity of my friend, I have once again joined the ranks of “Apron Wearers” in the kitchen. It brings me great joy every time I put it on to think of days gone by and my precious friend.
Here are a couple of Martha’s creations. They would make such fun gifts. If you would like to contact her, let me know and I will send you her information.
