I recently read Francis Chan’s latest book, You and Me Forever: Marriage in Light of Eternity. It was unlike any marriage book I have ever read.
Francis, along with his wife Lisa, wrote this book to dispel the idea that our goal as Christ followers is to have the happiest marriage possible. But who doesn’t want a happy marriage? I know I do. The problem is that we are going about it all backwards. The path to a great marriage is not by focusing more on marriage, but by making Jesus the absolute center of our lives.
To give you an idea of what that looks like in reality, here’s an awesome video of three couples seeking to serve God with their marriages. It’s a must watch!
You and Me Forever is the kind of book I wish I had read when I was single. I wasted a lot of my single years searching for a man to complete me like only God can and carried those faulty desires into my marriage as well. Let me just say, the more needy I became, the more unhappy I was. I expected my husband to fill up all the empty spaces in my heart – spaces which only God was meant to satisfy. That is what modern day idolatry looks like and I can testify that the results were quite ugly.
Jesus is more than enough- enough to satisfy the soul of a single woman and more than enough to produce joy in a worn out wife. A happy marriage is the byproduct of living a Christ-centered life. The more we are full of Christ, the less needy we will be and the more we will able to serve and give to others.
